This program, founded in Fall 2005 is intended for students interested in pursuing either employment or an advanced degree in the rapidly growing field of biotechnology. Students completing this degree will have acquired necessary laboratory skills and theoretical background for either employment or transfer to other four-year colleges or universities like the University of Southern Maine. Career and research opportunities include, but are not limited to, animal sciences, agrigenetics, immunogenetics, pharmaceutics, biomedical technologies, forensics, plus marine and environmental science.A recent University of Maine report funded by the Maine Technology Institute (see Portland Press Herald, February 2, 2003) states that "biotechnology is booming in [Maine], with the industry generating nearly $432 million in sales and employing 3,690 people in 2002." This report continues to add that "the industry's secondary economic impact contributed $685 million and supported 7,135 additional jobs."
